I made a lot of friends because of the works of Mr. Pratchett (OBE). Mostly through the alt.fan.pratchett newsgroup, but the fan activity has grown massively since those days. You can find out by following the lspace link what there is these days. It is run by volunteers, out of their own pockets and it is extremely well maintained, so go and visit it!

Although I'm not active in the a.f.p. community (and have not been for quite some years now), I still have very many real friends because of it and continue to be grateful of that.

• Discworld Convention 2004 - the last one, in 2002, was rather good really. Photos here.
• alt.fan.pratchett - the original newsgroup for discussion of Terry's work, though it is almost never on topic these days. There seem to be frequent flame-wars and general nastiness these days, but it does fluctuate. They can be nice, so I'm told.
• alt.books.pratchett - an on-topic newsgroup with much stricter rules than the above.
• alt.fan.pratchett.announce - where general announcements about events, plays, signing tours etc are announced. (Info only, postings must be submitted to moderators by email.)
• alt.talk.mended-drum - a pretty much zero traffic group these days.
